Illinois Gov Pritzker Poses With Peacekeeper Charged In Fatal Chicago Smash-And-Grab
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker met and posed for a photo with Kellen McMiller, a South Side anti-violence "peacekeeper," just days before McMiller allegedly participated in a smash-and-grab robbery at a Louis Vuitton store on Chicago's Magnificent Mile that resulted in the death of 40-year-old Mark Arceta. McMiller, who had four outstanding warrants from multiple states, was charged with first-degree murder, burglary, and retail theft along with six others involved in the crime. After the robbery, the getaway crew fled and crashed into Arceta's vehicle, leading to his death. Pritzker's office initially featured the photo in a press release about community violence prevention but later removed it after McMiller's arrest was publicized, stating the governor did not know him personally and condemning the alleged crime. Pritzker has emphasized his support for "peacekeepers" as part of Chicago's violence reduction efforts, contrasting this approach with President Trump's call for National Guard intervention. The incident has raised concerns over vetting processes for community violence intervention programs and the ability of individuals with outstanding warrants to participate in such initiatives.
