Ex-Firefighters Charged After Fatal Unauthorized Training

Two former Miami-Dade firefighters, Francisco Camero and Rafael Fernandez, face charges of manslaughter and negligence following a deadly unauthorized training exercise in Virginia Gardens in June 2024, which resulted in the death of Camero's son, Fabian. The exercise, part of an international firefighter fellowship program, was held in a building where live fire training was prohibited, and involved placing barrels filled with flammable materials. Fabian Camero, who was not supposed to partake in the exercise and was employed by a private ambulance company, suffered fatal injuries. Both firefighters resigned after the incident and have now posted bond. The exercise was conducted without proper authorization, and the building's owner had only agreed to non-destructive training. Legal proceedings are ongoing, with further investigations expected to bring additional charges against others involved.
