Genesys Denies Striking Nurses Aid After Church Shooting
Roughly 750 nurses and case workers represented by Teamsters Local 332 have been on strike at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc Township since Sept. 1, seeking better nurse-to-patient ratios and improved working conditions. On Sept. 28, a mass shooting and fire at a nearby Grand Blanc church sent multiple victims to Genesys, and several striking nurses say they temporarily put down picket signs and attempted to help but were turned away by hospital security and administration. Henry Ford Health said Genesys was already appropriately staffed with alternative personnel, that striking staff lacked access to systems and medications, and that non-working staff could not be allowed into a fluid mass-casualty incident for security and patient-safety reasons. The incident has amplified tensions between union nurses who say their skills were sidelined during a community emergency and hospital officials who insist patient care was not compromised. Hospital leadership asked that the tragedy not be used as a bargaining tactic.
