Cyprus Seeks UAE Cooperation on EU-Funded Subsea Power Cable Amid Investigation
Cyprus is reaffirming its commitment to the ambitious Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, a subsea power cable linking Greece, Cyprus, and eventually Israel, despite political obstacles and a European Public Prosecutor’s Office investigation into possible criminal offenses related to the EU-funded initiative. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides has engaged with the United Arab Emirates to explore a joint partnership to support the project, underscoring Cyprus's dedication amid calls from Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for Cyprus to clearly demonstrate its commitment. The project, now managed by the Greek transmission operator IPTO, aims to create the world's longest and deepest high-voltage cable, which would address Cyprus's energy isolation. However, Turkey's opposition and naval activities near the cable's operations add geopolitical tension, prompting Greece to pledge naval protection for the project. Despite these challenges, Greece remains focused on the GSI as a priority for regional energy interconnection, while awaiting clearer indications from Cyprus on its intentions to proceed. Cyprus continues to seek clarifications on the project's costs, viability, and potential liabilities for delays.
