Brendan Depa, an 18-year-old Florida student with autism, has been sentenced to five years in prison and 15 years of probation for brutally assaulting teacher's aide Joan Naydich at Matanzas High School in February 2023. The attack occurred after Naydich attempted to take away Depa's Nintendo Switch, leading to severe injuries including broken ribs, a concussion, and PTSD. Despite Depa's mother's pleas and arguments that the school failed to accommodate his disabilities, Judge Terence Perkins emphasized the need for accountability due to Depa's lack of remorse and history of violence. The judge also mandated a full mental health evaluation and treatment for Depa while in prison. Naydich, who testified about the lasting impact of the attack on her life, supported the steep sentence.
