Media Matters Sues X, Challenges Global Lawsuits

Media Matters for America has launched a lawsuit against Elon Musk's social media platform, X, claiming a breach of contract due to multiple lawsuits filed by X in Texas, Ireland, and Singapore. The nonprofit alleges that these lawsuits are part of a 'vendetta-driven campaign' to intimidate them following their reporting on X's placement of ads next to extremist content, which led to advertiser boycotts. Media Matters argues that X's terms of service mandated any disputes to be resolved in San Francisco, not in the jurisdictions where X filed its lawsuits. The group is seeking damages for its legal expenses and an injunction to prevent further lawsuits outside of the U.S. It contends that defending against X's claims has financially strained the organization and forced layoffs. The legal conflict escalated after Media Matters highlighted issues regarding X's advertising practices and Musk's perceived endorsement of antisemitic content, prompting Musk to threaten a 'thermonuclear lawsuit' against the group.
