Delta Flight's Close Call with Air Force Jet
Delta Air Lines Flight 2983 narrowly avoided a mid-air collision with a U.S. Air Force T-38 Talon jet near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The incident occurred on a Friday afternoon as the Delta Airbus A319 was departing for Minneapolis, while the T-38 jets were conducting a ceremonial flyover at Arlington National Cemetery. An alert from the aircraft's Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System prompted air traffic controllers to issue corrective instructions to both crafts, successfully preventing a disaster. This close call has sparked an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) into air traffic coordination in the area. The event comes just two months after a deadly collision in the same airspace, highlighting ongoing safety concerns. Senator Amy Klobuchar has expressed concerns and plans to seek explanations from the Department of Defense about the Air Force's flight operations in such restricted airspace.
