Christmas Train Services Face Disruption Risks

The UK government is bracing for potential disruptions to train services during Christmas due to staff shortages and ongoing strikes. Rail Minister Lord Hendy expressed concerns before MPs regarding the reliance on train crew to volunteer for overtime shifts, especially for Sunday services, which is not included in most contracts. This shortage could exacerbate delays, particularly during peak travel times and when engineering works are scheduled. Additionally, members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union plan to strike on December 22, 23, and 29 over disputes regarding working conditions at Avanti West Coast, which could lead to significant service disruptions. Avanti has stated that customers holding tickets for affected dates will be allowed to travel on alternate services. The situation is being monitored closely by the Department for Transport as the festive season approaches.
