Helicopter crashes on hotel roof
A stolen helicopter crashed onto the roof of the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Cairns, Australia, around 1:50 AM, resulting in the pilot's death and injuries to two hotel guests from smoke inhalation. The pilot, whose identity remains unknown, was the only occupant of the helicopter, which belonged to Nautilus Aviation and was taken without authorization from Cairns Airport. The accident caused a fire that led to the evacuation of approximately 400 guests, with parts of the helicopter landing in the hotel's pool and on the street. Authorities, including the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, are investigating the incident, focusing on potential violations of aviation regulations. Queensland Police have declared the situation safe, asserting it is an isolated incident, while the hotel remains cordoned off for structural assessment. Witnesses described the crash as sounding like a bomb explosion, highlighting the chaotic scene that unfolded in the busy tourist area.
