Man Charged in Singapore Church Stabbing
A Singaporean man, Basnayake Keith Spencer, was charged with stabbing Catholic priest Father Christopher Lee during mass at St Joseph's Church in Bukit Timah on November 9. Spencer, who is 37 and has a history of offenses involving serious hurt and drug misuse, used a foldable knife for the attack, which is not believed to be religiously motivated or an act of terrorism. Father Lee suffered injuries to his mouth, underwent surgery, and is in stable condition. Spencer was apprehended by members of the congregation and will undergo psychiatric evaluation as part of the legal proceedings. The incident has prompted increased police patrols at places of worship, and religious leaders have called for vigilance against suspicious activities. Singapore, known for its safety, has seen a rise in crime, with this incident shocking the community and prompting solidarity among religious groups.
