Mount Etna's Strongest Eruption Since 2014
Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano, erupted on June 2, 2025, in its most powerful event since 2014, sending ash, gas, and rock fragments high into the Sicilian sky. The eruption caused a partial crater collapse and unleashed pyroclastic flows and lava streams, but no injuries or casualties were reported. Dozens of hikers approached the summit despite prior warnings, leading authorities to swiftly restrict access. The eruption temporarily disrupted flights at Catania Airport and triggered aviation alerts, though major evacuations were not required. Officials emphasized no immediate threat to residents but warned of health risks from volcanic ash, particularly for those with respiratory issues. Volcanic activity has since subsided and the alert level has been reduced.
