Italy Sends Navy Frigate to Aid Gaza-Bound Flotilla After Drone Attacks Off Greece
An international aid flotilla, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, was attacked by multiple drones in international waters off Greece, resulting in explosions and damage to several vessels. Italy responded by sending a navy frigate, the Fasan, to assist the flotilla and ensure the safety of Italian citizens and other activists on board, including members of parliament and MEPs. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto condemned the drone attack by unidentified perpetrators and authorized the naval intervention for possible rescue operations. Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani urged Israel to guarantee the safety of those on the flotilla and emphasized that any Israeli operations must comply with international law and be conducted with caution. The flotilla, which departed from Barcelona and consists of 51 vessels, has faced prior drone attacks, including incidents off Tunisia. Israel has criticized the flotilla, accusing its activists of links to Hamas, and has warned it would take necessary measures to stop the flotilla if it refuses to dock at an Israeli port for aid transfer.
