Former Chicago Ald. Ed Burke Sentenced to Two Years in Prison on Corruption Charges

Former Chicago Alderman Ed Burke has been sentenced to two years in prison and fined $2 million after being convicted of racketeering, bribery, and attempted extortion. Burke, who served on the Chicago City Council for 54 years, used his position to win business for his law firm by pressuring business owners and developers. The prosecution had sought a 10-year sentence, while his defense requested home confinement, citing his age and numerous letters of support. U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall emphasized the need to send a message against public corruption. The case was built on over 100 secret recordings by ex-alderman Daniel Solis, who cooperated with the FBI. Burke will also face one year of supervised release following his prison term.
