The Fort Lauderdale Police Department is actively searching for the driver of a dark-colored Jeep Wrangler involved in a fatal incident early Sunday morning in the 100 block of Northwest First Street. The incident occurred at approximately 2:06 a.m. when the Jeep ran over 73-year-old Esperant Lahens, who was lying on the ground near the curb. It remains unclear whether the driver was aware of Lahens' presence, as he was found unresponsive hours later at around 6:25 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene. Surveillance footage showed three individuals entering the Jeep before it ran over Lahens, but the driver is not currently accused of a crime. Police are urging anyone with information to contact Traffic Homicide Investigator Russell Brown or Broward Crime Stoppers.
