Germany Establishes New Territorial Defense Division

Germany is establishing a new Territorial Defense Division within the Bundeswehr, set to take effect on April 1, 2025. This restructuring will consolidate existing reserve units under direct army command, increasing the number of operational divisions to four while maintaining a total personnel count of approximately 180,000. The new division will primarily focus on protecting critical infrastructure within Germany, including ports, railways, and supply routes, amid rising concerns over potential Russian aggression and sabotage against German assets. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized the urgency of this initiative as NATO remains on heightened alert, reminiscent of Cold War tensions.
