In Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, fourteen individuals, including local journalist Avneesh Dixit, have been arrested for attempting to illegally capture government land worth over Rs 1,000 crore. The arrests followed complaints from a revenue officer and a resident whose family had been leasing the land, alleging that the group forcibly entered the premises, broke locks, and attempted to take control of the property. The police have filed multiple FIRs against the accused under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. The land in question was originally leased in 1884 for 99 years, with the lease subsequently renewed for an additional 25 years, which has now expired. Authorities are continuing efforts to apprehend other individuals involved in the incident. This case highlights ongoing issues of land grabbing and property disputes in the region.
