Minnesota Man Convicted for 2023 Austin Drive-By Shooting Killing One, Injuring Two
Fabian Jay Hernandez was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the 2020 murder of Christopher Michael Alderete and for being a felon in possession of a firearm, with both sentences served concurrently. Hernandez shot Alderete in the head after a confrontation and fired at a passenger before fleeing; he has a lengthy criminal history including evading arrest and assaults. In a separate case, Cham Obang Oman was convicted by a jury for his role in a deadly 2023 drive-by shooting in Austin, Minnesota, which killed Gumdel Gilo and injured two others. Oman was found guilty of aiding and abetting second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder, having driven the vehicle from which his accomplice Jenup Stepen Chop fired over 20 rounds. Chop has been sentenced to over 37 years in prison for murder, while another accomplice, Manamany Omot Abella, pleaded guilty to aiding an offender and awaits sentencing. Attorney General Keith Ellison condemned the actions of Oman and his accomplices and expressed sympathy for the victims in the Minnesota case.
