Kwik Trip, Kwik Star End Penny Use; Round Cash

Kwik Trip and Kwik Star will phase out pennies; as individual stores exhaust their penny supply they will automatically round all cash purchases down to the nearest five cents. The company has updated registers to apply the rounding rules in customers' favor, while card and digital payments will continue to be charged the exact amount. President and CEO Scott Zietlow said the change is intended to keep transactions simple and fair and apologized for any confusion. The policy will remain in effect until a permanent legislative solution is enacted, even though pennies remain legal tender, and follows the U.S. Treasury's decision to stop minting pennies because production now costs more than face value.
