Cricket West Indies Plans Regional Growth Across Americas
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced a strategic initiative to expand cricket across North, Central, and South America by establishing La Federación de Críquet de las Américas (FECA), a new regional body aimed at fostering collaboration and growth in the sport. This move follows CWI President Dr. Kishore Shallow's visit to Lima, Peru, underscoring CWI's leadership role as the only ICC Full Member in the Americas and its commitment to the wider region beyond the Caribbean. CWI CEO Chris Dehring highlighted the significant growth of cricket hubs in countries like Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina, noting that Brazil alone has 72,000 registered players, many of whom are women under professional contracts. The initiative already includes the participation of two U.S. youth teams in CWI’s Rising Stars Under-19 Tournament and the involvement of U.S. players in the Caribbean Premier League, along with plans for Caribbean teams to compete in the Bolivarian Games in Peru. This expansion effort is seen as a way to strengthen national programs, broaden the West Indies' player base, and increase the sport's regional relevance, with cricket also slated to feature in the 2027 Pan American Games. Overall, CWI seeks to create a structured, collaborative, and unified vision to unlock the immense potential of cricket throughout the Americas.
