Braves Add Reliever Chavez, Place Starter Schwellenbach on 60-Day IL
The Atlanta Braves continue to rely on veteran pitcher Jesse Chavez, who has been added to the major league roster for the seventh time, including twice in 2025, as they manage injuries within their pitching staff. Chavez's return comes after right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach suffered a fractured right elbow and was placed on the 60-day injured list, leaving a significant hole in the rotation that forced the Braves to use a bullpen game. Schwellenbach’s injury is serious but there is hope he could return late in the season, while left-hander Dylan Dodd was optioned back to Triple-A. Meanwhile, former Braves starter Shelby Miller, now with the Arizona Diamondbacks, has been having one of the best seasons of his career after converting to a relief role, but a forearm strain recently placed him on the injured list, impacting Arizona’s wildcard hopes. The Braves face a challenging stretch against the Oakland Athletics, who are in the process of relocating and currently play in a minor league stadium in Sacramento, which has been described as feeling like spring training by players. In other MLB news, the New York Yankees signed veteran reliever Geoff Hartlieb to replace the injured Clarke Schmidt, who is expected to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, with rookie Luis Gil nearing a rehab assignment and potential return.
