Zakia Jafri, Gujarat riots survivor and activist, dies at 86

Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, passed away at the age of 86 in Ahmedabad, marking the loss of a prominent figure in the fight for justice following the 2002 Gujarat riots. Ehsan Jafri was among 69 victims killed in the Gulberg Society massacre during the riots that erupted after the Godhra train burning incident. Zakia became well-known for her relentless legal battle against high-ranking officials, including then Chief Minister Narendra Modi, seeking accountability for the violence. Despite her efforts, the Supreme Court dismissed her plea challenging a clean chit given to Modi and others in 2022.
