EAT‑Lancet: Planetary Diet Could Avert 15M Deaths, Cut Emissions
The 2025 EAT‑Lancet Commission reports that adopting a plant‑rich “planetary health diet” could avert roughly 15 million premature deaths a year (about 27% of global deaths). The commission says dietary shifts and related measures could substantially cut food‑system greenhouse‑gas emissions and reduce land and water demands from red‑meat production, with some analyses estimating more than a half reduction by 2050. Recommended intakes include whole grains (~150 g/day), fruits and vegetables (~500 g/day), nuts (~25 g/day), legumes (~75 g/day), limited added sugars, salt and saturated fat, modest animal products (about one dairy and one animal‑protein serving daily) and red meat limited to roughly one small serving per week. The diet is designed to be flexible and culturally adaptable, but the commission highlights severe global inequalities — including that about 2.8 billion people cannot afford a healthy diet — that must be addressed for equitable implementation. Commissioners say the 2025 findings are consistent with 2019 work and strengthen the case that dietary shifts, together with policies to reduce food loss and boost sustainable production, are key to meeting health, climate and biodiversity goals.
