A 36-year-old man from Tampa was killed in a head-on collision with a semi-truck on US 98 North at Earnest Road in Polk County early Saturday morning. The incident, which occurred around 3:16 a.m., happened when the driver of a 2020 Chevy Silverado attempted to pass another vehicle, veering into the northbound lane and colliding with the oncoming truck. The driver of the semi-truck and his passenger were uninjured, while the Tampa man died instantly. All involved were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Authorities report that no criminal or civil charges are anticipated, but the investigation is ongoing. The road was closed for approximately five hours as crews worked to clear the scene.
