Barry George Charged with 1987 Sexual Offences
Barry George, 65, who was previously convicted then acquitted of murdering BBC presenter Jill Dando, has been charged with historic sexual offences in England. The Metropolitan Police and Crown Prosecution Service say he faces one count of rape and two counts of indecent assault over allegations that a 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted on two occasions between 6 and 12 September 1987 in west London; the complainant is now in her 50s. George, who now lives in County Cork, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 29 October. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said specially trained officers are supporting the woman and that the charges follow an investigation by a team of Met detectives. The CPS reminded the public that proceedings are active, that George has a right to a fair trial, and warned against reporting or online commentary that could prejudice the case; the Dando murder remains unsolved.
