Leonardo, Baykar Near Partnership in UAV Technology

Italian defense company Leonardo is in advanced discussions to partner with Turkish drone manufacturer Baykar, focusing on integrating Leonardo's advanced electronic and radar systems into Baykar's unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This collaboration aims to enhance the technological capabilities of both companies, particularly in the drone market, where Baykar's products have gained international prominence following their deployment in recent conflicts. The partnership could potentially evolve into a joint venture, further supported by Baykar's recent acquisition of Italian aircraft producer Piaggio Aerospace. Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani recently visited Baykar's facilities in Turkey to assess their drone systems, including the notable Bayraktar TB2. This strategic move aligns with Leonardo's ongoing efforts to expand its market presence through technological synergies, as demonstrated by its previous collaborations with companies like Rheinmetall. The partnership is seen as an opportunity for both firms to leverage their strengths in the defense sector, particularly in uncrewed systems.
