General Atomics Invests $20M in Canadian UNITY-2 Fusion Fuel Facility
General Atomics has committed a $20 million, ten-year investment in Fusion Fuel Cycles, Inc. (FFC), a Canadian joint venture between Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and Kyoto Fusioneering, to support the development of UNITY-2, the world’s first fully integrated fusion fuel cycle test facility. Scheduled to be operational by mid-2026 at CNL's Ontario campus, UNITY-2 will simulate the complete deuterium-tritium (D-T) fuel cycle, addressing the critical challenges of tritium recovery, purification, and resupply essential for commercial fusion power plants. This initiative aims to accelerate fusion technology development by providing a platform for industry participants to test and advance their components, enhancing the technology readiness level toward commercialization. The investment also aligns with Canada’s Industrial and Technological Benefits Policy, with General Atomics leveraging the facility for its fusion R&D and supporting safe tritium handling methods. Canadian government officials have expressed strong support for this collaboration, emphasizing its importance to clean energy innovation and fusion energy advancement. Through this partnership, General Atomics and FFC aim to solve key technical challenges and bring fusion energy closer to practical, scalable deployment.
