Detectives investigating Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP's finances have asked prosecutors for guidance on the next steps in the long-running Operation Branchform. Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, Ms. Sturgeon's husband, was charged with embezzling party funds in April, while Sturgeon and ex-SNP treasurer Colin Beattie, both of whom were previously arrested and released without charge, remain under investigation. The investigation focuses on incidents said to have occurred between 2016 and 2023. Police Scotland submitted an 'advice and guidance report' to the Crown Office on August 9, 2024, and are awaiting their direction. Sturgeon has denied any wrongdoing and insists she will cooperate fully with the inquiry. The Crown Office is considering whether there is sufficient evidence to prosecute and if it would be in the public interest.
