Frank McCutcheon, 53, and Brett McCutcheon, 32, employees of Olympia Sheet Metal, have been charged with second-degree manslaughter for the death of Evergreen State College student Jonathan Rodriguez due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The father-son duo negligently installed a tankless water heater in Rodriguez's apartment, leading to carbon monoxide levels over 20 times the acceptable limit. Two other students and a responding police officer were also hospitalized. The Washington State Patrol's investigation revealed that the McCutcheons failed to follow installation guidelines, and Evergreen staff had dismissed carbon monoxide alarms as false. The forensic report concluded that the installation was a gross deviation from standard HVAC practices. Frank McCutcheon pleaded not guilty at his arraignment, while Brett's arraignment is scheduled for September.
