Officer Enrique Martinez Killed in East Chatham Shooting

Chicago police have charged Darian McMillan, a 23-year-old convicted felon, with multiple felonies, including first-degree murder, for the shooting death of Officer Enrique Martinez during a traffic stop in the East Chatham neighborhood. The incident, which occurred on Monday night, also resulted in the death of another vehicle occupant. McMillan, who was on electronic monitoring, allegedly used an automatic weapon in the attack and attempted to flee the scene, but was captured after a brief chase. Officer Martinez, who had nearly three years of service, was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Police Superintendent Larry Snelling, along with Mayor Brandon Johnson and State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, emphasized the need to address violent crime and repeat offenders in the city. The press conference announcing the charges reflects ongoing concerns about the safety of police officers in Chicago, echoing past tragedies such as the deaths of officers Ella French and Vasquez Lasso.
