Maputo Port Begins $164 Million Expansion Project

Construction has begun on the $164 million first phase of the Maputo Port expansion project, which aims to enhance the container terminal's capacity from 255,000 TEUs to 530,000 TEUs annually over the next two years. The initiative, a collaboration between DP World and the Maputo Port Development Company, will include extending the quay by 400 meters and deepening the berth draught to 16 meters, allowing for larger vessels to dock. This expansion is particularly timely as exporters are seeking alternatives to South Africa's congested logistics routes. The project also involves adding over 700 reefer plugs to support increased agricultural exports from the region. Executives from DP World highlighted the importance of this development for Mozambique, reinforcing its strategic role as a regional trade hub. The expansion is expected to improve operational efficiency and create new job opportunities, solidifying Maputo's position in the shipping landscape by 2026.
