Alex Greenwich Wins Defamation Case Against Mark Latham

Independent MP Alex Greenwich has won a defamation case against former One Nation NSW leader Mark Latham, resulting in a $140,000 award for damages. The case stemmed from a homophobic tweet posted by Latham in March 2023, which Greenwich argued implied he engaged in 'disgusting sexual activities' and caused significant harm to his reputation. Justice David O'Callaghan found that while Latham's tweet conveyed the first defamatory meaning, other claims related to further comments made in a newspaper were not upheld. The tweet drew widespread condemnation, prompting calls for Latham to apologize, including from political leaders across the spectrum. Greenwich revealed that the fallout from the tweet led to severe personal distress, including panic attacks and threats to his safety. Latham's defense claimed the tweet did not harm Greenwich's overall reputation, a claim the court did not accept.
