Gov. Healey Seizes St. Elizabeth's Hospital

Governor Maura Healey has seized St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton, Boston, using eminent domain to prevent its closure amid Steward Health Care's bankruptcy. The hospital's operations will be transferred to Boston Medical Center to ensure continued access to healthcare for tens of thousands of patients and to save thousands of jobs. This move follows the closure of two other Steward hospitals, Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center, after failing to find buyers. Healey criticized Apollo Global Management, the landowner, for prioritizing profit over public health. The U.S. Senate has also held Steward CEO Ralph de la Torre in criminal contempt for refusing to testify about the company's bankruptcy. The state's actions aim to stabilize the healthcare system affected by Steward's financial collapse.
