Andreeva ousts Swiatek, reaches Dubai semis
In a stunning upset, 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva defeated world No. 2 Iga Swiatek 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, marking her first career victory over the Polish player. This win propels Andreeva into her first WTA 1000 semi-final and makes her the youngest semi-finalist in the tournament's history since its inception in 2001. Andreeva overcame early challenges, including trailing 3-1 in the second set, and credited her coach, Conchita Martinez, for encouraging her to maintain her aggressive play. Swiatek's loss, alongside that of world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka earlier in the tournament, signifies a major shake-up in the competition as all top five seeds have been eliminated. Andreeva's victory adds to her impressive record, being her fifth win over a top-10 player. She is set to face either sixth-seeded Elena Rybakina or Sofia Kenin in the semi-finals.
