Wild Triticale Hybrid Discovered in Kansas Wheat Fields
A new hybrid plant, identified as a wheat x triticale hybrid, has been discovered in Kansas wheat fields, standing out due to its height and distinct head shape. This unintentional hybrid was found in three locations—Dickinson County, Marion County, and south-central Kansas—by inspectors from the Kansas Crop Improvement Association (KCIA). Genetic testing confirmed its origins, revealing a combination of 41 wheat and 7 rye chromosomes, making it a second-generation hybrid. While the hybrid only produces about three seeds per plant, its 60% seed viability raises concerns about its potential impact on wheat production in the future. Farmers are encouraged to report sightings and remove the plants manually if found, with assurance from KCIA that the state's seed certification system will help manage the situation. This discovery marks the first identification of this specific hybrid, informally referred to as 'quadrotriticale' by KCIA officials.
