Waymo Begins Employee Robotaxi Testing at San Jose Airport
Waymo has received approval to begin testing and eventually offer commercial autonomous robotaxi services at San José Mineta International Airport, marking the first such service at a California airport and only the second globally. Initial testing with Waymo employees will start this fall, followed by public availability later in 2025, allowing travelers to hail rides via the Waymo app from Terminals A and B to destinations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. This expansion builds on Waymo's existing operations across multiple U.S. cities, including Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin, and reflects the company's rapid growth and strategic focus on airport transportation hubs. San José officials, including Mayor Matt Mahan, highlight the timing as ideal due to upcoming major sporting events like the 2026 World Cup and Super Bowl near Levi's Stadium, emphasizing Waymo's role in advancing local transportation innovation. The partnership showcases Silicon Valley's commitment to cutting-edge technology and aims to enhance the travel experience by providing a safe, efficient, and convenient autonomous ride option for airport passengers. Waymo plans to further expand its services to other airports and cities, continuing its nationwide rollout of self-driving vehicle technology.
