Myanmar Detains Over 10,000 Foreigners in Cross-Border Online Scam Crackdown

Myanmar's military government has intensified its crackdown on illegal immigration and online scams, detaining over 10,000 foreign nationals throughout 2025 for involvement in online gambling, telecom fraud, and related cybercrimes. In a recent operation in Kayin State's Myawady area near the Thailand border, authorities apprehended 151 individuals, primarily Indian nationals and one South Korean, who had entered the country illegally to participate in such illicit activities. Of the total detainees identified since January 2025, approximately 9,340 have already been repatriated, with the remainder held in secure custody awaiting deportation arrangements coordinated with foreign embassies. This campaign is part of a broader effort by Myanmar, in cooperation with neighboring countries like Thailand and China, to dismantle cross-border criminal networks and enhance regional security. Authorities are processing detainees under Myanmar's legal system and emphasizing diplomatic coordination to ensure smooth repatriation.
