The "Air Bud" franchise is being rebooted with a new film titled "Air Bud Returns," set for release in summer 2026. After a nationwide search, two golden retrievers named Charlie from Ohio and Summer from California were cast as the basketball-playing Buddy, chosen from thousands of applicants for their athleticism, charm, and heart. The film, directed by Robert Vince, follows a 12-year-old boy named Jacob who discovers a stray golden retriever and together they unite a team of misfits to chase a basketball championship, exploring themes of healing and teamwork. Notably, a golden retriever named Willard from Kentucky was also a finalist in the casting process, highlighting the extensive search for the new Buddy. Filming will begin in Vancouver with professional trainers preparing the dogs for their roles.
