Janice Tjen Wins Chennai Singles, Doubles Titles

Janice Tjen, 23, captured the WTA 250 Chennai Open singles crown with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Kimberly Birrell. She became the first Indonesian to win a WTA Tour singles title since 2002. Tjen also added the Chennai doubles title alongside Aldila Sutjiadi. She began the year ranked No.412 and surged into the top 100, with reports after Chennai showing about a 29-place jump from No.82 to roughly No.53. Her Chennai run included wins over Linda Fruhvirtova and Lanlana Tararudee and capped a breakout season that included a lower-tier Jinan title.
