EU Delegation Heads to Washington for Russia Sanctions Talks

The European Union is intensifying coordination with the United States to develop a new package of sanctions against Russia aimed at forcing an end to the war in Ukraine. European Council President António Costa announced that a delegation is traveling to Washington to work closely with American partners on these measures, following previous sanctions efforts that include both direct and secondary restrictions. Costa emphasized that Ukraine's EU membership is viewed as a key guarantee of security and prosperity for the country, and praised ongoing reforms despite the conflict. The move comes shortly after a phone call involving U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European leaders, during which Trump criticized EU countries for purchasing Russian oil that finances Moscow's military. EU member states have already imposed 18 sanctions packages on Russia and are preparing a 19th to escalate pressure amid continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. The coordinated effort underscores the transatlantic partnership in supporting Ukraine's defense, peace negotiations, and future integration into the EU.
