Sri Lanka Launches GTEX Program to Advance Sustainable Apparel Industry

Sri Lanka's apparel sector, a key part of its export economy, is undergoing a transformative shift to embrace sustainability, circularity, and digital innovation, supported by initiatives like the Global Textile and Clothing (GTEX) program in partnership with the International Trade Centre and Swiss government. The program focuses on enabling SMEs to reduce environmental impacts and build circular business models, while champion companies mentor smaller firms to adopt efficient production methods, positioning Sri Lanka as a leader in responsible apparel manufacturing. Meanwhile, India’s textile and apparel industry, employing over 45 million people and contributing significantly to its GDP, faces challenges due to fragmented MSMEs and stagnant global trade share but aims for bold reforms to reach a $40 billion export target by 2030. However, global sustainability efforts face setbacks as shifting political climates and policies, including the EU’s rollback of key sustainability legislation and U.S. tariffs under the Trump administration, introduce uncertainty and complicate supply chain decarbonization strategies. These challenges are causing industry players to scramble for contingency plans amid rising costs and regulatory ambiguity, highlighting the tension between economic pressures and sustainability goals worldwide. Additionally, evolving fashion trends emphasize sustainable materials and local craftsmanship, reflecting a broader industry move towards integrating creativity, technology, and environmental consciousness.
