Deputy Andrew Nunez Killed; Suspect Angelo Saldivar Captured
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nunez, 28, was fatally shot in the head Monday after responding to a domestic-violence call on the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive in Rancho Cucamonga; he later died at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. Authorities identified the suspect as 47-year-old Angelo Jose Saldivar of San Bernardino, who fled on a motorcycle and led a high-speed pursuit on the eastbound 210 Freeway with speeds reported between about 120 mph and nearly 200 mph. The chase ended when an off‑duty narcotics deputy in an unmarked vehicle deliberately struck the motorcycle in a described “legal intervention,” ejecting Saldivar; he was hospitalized and is expected to be booked on suspicion of murder once medically cleared. Sheriff Shannon Dicus and Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed condolences, and the county district attorney said he is treating the case as a murder of a peace officer. Investigators are continuing to probe the shooting, the initial domestic-violence incident and the pursuit, noting additional weapons were observed during the chase and warning about the extreme danger to motorists.
