Last Generation disbands

The Last Generation climate activist group in Austria has announced its disbandment and the end of protests due to overwhelming legal costs and a perceived failure to win public support for their cause. Spokesperson Afra Porsche criticized the criminalization of their actions while acknowledging that society has largely remained indifferent to the climate crisis. Despite achieving significant media attention, the group could not convert this into a broader movement, as outlined by Die Presse. The movement plans to use its remaining funds to cover legal fees and expressed sadness over society's reluctance to address fossil fuel reliance. However, they indicated that this does not mark the end of climate activism in Austria; rather, they intend to reframe their efforts under a new name. In contrast, the German branch of Last Generation will continue its protests, focusing on actions against climate-damaging air traffic.
