Former Santos Campaign Treasurer Sentenced Probation, Ordered $178K Restitution
Nancy Marks, the former campaign treasurer for disgraced ex-Representative George Santos, was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay more than $178,000 in restitution after pleading guilty to conspiracy to defraud the U.S., filing false campaign finance reports, obstructing the Federal Election Commission, and aggravated identity theft. Marks admitted to conspiring with Santos to report fake campaign donations from at least 10 relatives and falsely claiming Santos loaned the campaign $500,000, both schemes aimed at qualifying for financial support from the National Party Committee. Her guilty plea and cooperation were critical in building the federal case against Santos, who was sentenced to over seven years in prison for related crimes, including identity theft and stealing donor money. Marks apologized for her role and vowed to avoid future political involvement. The sentencing, which avoided prison time and included a heavily redacted sentencing memorandum, fueled speculation about her extensive cooperation with prosecutors. Marks had left Santos' team in early 2023 after revelations about Santos' fabrications regarding his education, work history, and background surfaced.
