2024 Sees Record Journalist Deaths in Conflicts

In 2024, a total of 122 journalists and media workers were reported killed globally, with the International Federation of Journalists highlighting 77 fatalities in the Middle East, primarily due to the conflict in Gaza. Reporters Without Borders indicated that out of 54 journalists killed, 31 were in conflict zones, with Gaza being the deadliest area, accounting for nearly one-third of these deaths. UNESCO also confirmed the alarming trend, documenting 68 journalist fatalities, with a notable increase in conflict zone deaths, reflecting a decade high. Amnesty International emphasized the broader humanitarian crisis in Gaza, reporting the deaths of over 42,000 people, including approximately 140 journalists. The data underscores the escalating risks faced by journalists, particularly in oppressive regimes and active war zones, with 516 journalists currently imprisoned worldwide, predominantly in China, Myanmar, and Israel.
