Paul Mitchell will step down as Newcastle United's sporting director after less than a year in the role, departing by mutual consent next month. Mitchell joined Newcastle in July 2024, replacing Dan Ashworth, and worked closely with CEO Darren Eales, who is also set to leave soon due to health reasons. During Mitchell's tenure, Newcastle won the EFL Cup—their first major domestic trophy in 70 years—and qualified for next season's Champions League, despite challenges including player sales to comply with Premier League financial rules. Although there were reports of tension between Mitchell and manager Eddie Howe, both denied any significant disagreements regarding transfers. Mitchell leaves with the club in a strong position, having already identified transfer targets for the upcoming season, and expressed gratitude to the club's staff, players, owners, and fans.
