Change Healthcare, a unit of UnitedHealth Group, has initiated the notification process for a significant data breach affecting Americans, including compromised data like Social Security numbers and medical information. The cyberattack disrupted critical healthcare operations, with patient information such as contact details, insurance info, diagnoses, and more potentially exposed. Despite reviewing 90% of breached files, no evidence of full medical histories being exfiltrated has been found. The attack, attributed to a Russian ransomware gang, led to UnitedHealth paying $22 million in Bitcoin for data. Change Healthcare offers affected individuals two years of credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.
