Matthews appoints James Avens as police chief
The Town of Matthews has appointed James E. Avens, Jr. as the new Chief of Police, effective June 2, succeeding Interim Chief Penny Dunn. Avens brings over 23 years of law enforcement experience, most recently serving as Interim Chief of the Elizabeth City Police Department and previously as Deputy Chief there. He began his career with the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and has held various roles in law enforcement, including Chief of Police in Weldon. Avens holds degrees in Business Administration and Administration, along with advanced training from the FBI and leadership programs at prominent universities. Town Manager Becky Hawke highlighted Avens' commitment to community policing and leadership qualities as key factors in his selection. Avens expressed enthusiasm for the role and a desire to foster trust and collaboration within the Matthews community.
