Woman Dies in Santee Jail; Investigation Underway

A 31-year-old woman died on Monday after being found unresponsive in her cell at the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee, California. Jail staff discovered her during routine checks around 7:25 p.m. and performed CPR before paramedics transported her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 8:15 p.m. The woman had been in custody since Sunday on charges including vehicle theft and resisting arrest, but her identity has not been released pending family notification. The San Diego County Sheriff's Homicide Unit is investigating, as is standard for in-custody deaths, and the Medical Examiner’s Office will determine cause and manner of death. The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board is also reviewing the case. Authorities have extended condolences to the woman’s family.
