Lenzing Increases Austrian Solar Capacity to 8.3 MWp

The Lenzing Group, an Austrian fiber manufacturer, has expanded its renewable energy portfolio by commissioning a new 1.3 MWp photovoltaic plant at its Lenzing site, raising its total photovoltaic capacity to 8.3 MWp. This addition complements Lenzing's existing renewable energy projects, including three small hydropower plants totaling 2.3 MW and long-term contracts for wind energy, supporting the company's goal of transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy and achieving energy independence. Partnering with Austria-based Verbund, Lenzing is advancing its strategy to diversify its energy mix with biomass, photovoltaics, wind, and hydropower to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs while managing market volatility. The company emphasizes the importance of political support, such as electricity price subsidies, to meet its ambitious sustainability and climate goals, including a science-based net-zero target validated by SBTi. Lenzing's approach highlights the benefits of industrial self-generation through on-site renewable energy production, which can transform manufacturing sites into flexible energy hubs with competitive advantages.
