Flyers Legend Ed Van Impe Dies at 84
Ed Van Impe, a two-time Stanley Cup champion and former captain of the Philadelphia Flyers, died at age 84. He played nine seasons with the Flyers as an original member and was their second captain, known for his tough defensive style and leadership. Van Impe delivered a controversial hit on Soviet star Valeri Kharlamov during the 1976 Super Series, prompting the Soviet Red Army team to temporarily leave the ice. He was a three-time NHL All-Star and was inducted into the Flyers Hall of Fame in 1993. After retiring, Van Impe served as a broadcaster and helped establish the Flyers Alumni Association. He is remembered as a respected leader and key figure in Flyers history.
